In the early 1980s, he grew up in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in northern Uganda which is surrounded by conflict and political instability, disinformation and misinformation fueled violence, social division, and unrest due to the rampant spread of false characterizations of the people in IDP camps as violent.^[1]^[2] In 2014, he lost a friend named Akena to a shooting in Kampala having survived Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebellion days.^[2] Both Owiny and Akena went to Layibi College in Gulu district and then sat for advanced level in 2004.^[2]
