In the circular he prepared in1846 he wrote, I have never denied the truth of theScripture and during his administration there are illu-strations innumerable of his appreciation of the sacredbook. Joshua Speed one of Lincolns closest friends visitedthe President in the summer of 1864 when the Lincolnswere living out at the Presidents Villa. Speed said: AsI entered the room, near night, he (Lincoln) was sittingnear a window intently reading his Bible. Lincoln often read the Bible to his family In these days when prayer is a response to the world crisis, Itcan well be remembered that President Abraham Lincoln met thecrisis of his day with prayer. In emergency—the siege of Vicksburg or the Battle of Gettys-burg—he prayed about these and said so. One of his bodyguards, Col. W. H. Cook, reported that every dayat 8 a.m. Lincoln would go into his study by himself and read achapter or two of the Bible. He also often read the Bible to his family. These facts were recalled Monday, the birthday of the presidentwho freed the slaves. Banks closed for the day in observance of Lincolns birthday. Schoolchildren observed the day with special studies about Lincoln. Justice of the peace courts A and B were closed Monday in observ-ance of Lincoln^ birthday.
