c. 1943. This is from a mostly uncaptioned WW II photo album. Most of the photos are apparently originals taken by an American serviceman and most appear to be from West and North Africa although there are some from Egypt, India, South Africa (probably commercial prints) and perhaps elsewhere. This one may be from what is now Ghana, but people using similar labrets also lived in Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. The photographer was stationed in Southern Ghana in December of 1942 and early 1943, though he may also have been in Côte d'Ivoire. The ethnic group is probably Birifor, Lobi, or Téguessié (Touna) or possibly Bobo-Fing or Tamberma.

For more information on labrets and other facial ornamentation in West Africa, see H. Labouret, "A propos des labrets en verre de quelque populations voltaiques," Bulletin de l'Institut Francais d'Afrique Noire, Tome XIV, Octobre 1952, No. 4, pp. 1385-1401. (The article comprises a wider range of topics than the title suggests.)
