Luckily, for my peace of mind, I had not, as yet, seen the “chutes”, but I was destined to know them well before long.

By this time (the beginning of November) the weather was turning colder and on this particular night, owing to rain, we camped on an Island – earlier than usual, but picked a spot well wooded, for shelter. The next day, Wednesday, was wet. It rained heavily during the daytime but towards evening turned to snow and grew considerable colder.
