Congress passed legislation in 1942 allowing women to serve in the Navy as part of the Women’s Reserve, or Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service (WAVES). With the United States entering World War II, WAVES filled officer and enlisted posts left vacant by their male counterparts who were deployed abroad.
Distinct WAVES uniform regulations were quickly established. In 1945, navy blue wool garrison caps were approved to be worn in combination with the service dress blue uniforms. This example retains the WAVES enlisted cap insignia, featuring a gold fouled anchor and contrasting silver propeller.
