A ƙarshen shekarun 1980s, Shirin Ƙwararrun na Afirka (AREPP) ya kafa SHIRI NA WASAN KWAIKWAYO NA BUTUM BUTUMI DAN RAGE YADUWAR CUTAR KANJAMAU ta hanyar wasan kwaikwayo na tafiye tafiye wanda ya ziyarci ƙauyuka da biranen Afirka don ƙarfafa masu sauraro su yi amfani da kwaroron roba don hana yaduwar cutar kanjamau.

An ƙaddamar da Shirin Bincike da Ilimi na Afirka (AREPP) a cikin shekarar 1987 a Afirka ta Kudu a matsayin amintacciyar al'umma don bincikar butum butumi da wasan kwaikwayon abin rufe fuska don manufar haɓaka ilimin zamantakewa da kiwon lafiya tare da wasan butum butumi da wasan kwaikwayo na haɓaka ƙwarewar rayuwa da tabbatar da inganci a cikin wuraren da ba a kula da su ba. AREPP ta yin amfani da ’butum butumi don koyar da “ilimin kanjamau na asali” duk da rashin haɗin kai na gwamnati a lokacin mulkin wariyar launin fata.[3

Wadanda suka kafa AREPP sun hada da Gary Friedman, Maishe Maponga, Ann Wanless da Oupa Mtimkulu.

Daga baya AREPP ta zama sananniyar AREPP babbar abun yarda don ceton rayuwa, inda ta karkata akalarta zuwa makarantu a yankunan da ke fama da talauci da ke da yawan kamuwa da cutar mai karya garkuwar jiki (kanjamau), cin zarafi da lalata da kananan yara.[3
