An haife shi a birnin Tunis a ranar 25 ga watan Afrilu 1943, Ben Ammar ya karanci fannin ilimin lissafi a Lycée Alaoui [fr]. Daga nan ya koma harkar cinema kuma ya sami difloma a harkar fim daga Institut des haute études cinématographiques a birnin Paris a shekarar 1965.

Bayan ya koma Tunisiya, Ben Ammar ya samu hayar kamfanin Tunisiya don shirya fina-finai da faɗaɗawa kuma ya fara ɗaukar gajerun fina-finai tare da taimakon daraktocin Tunisiya da na waje. Ya kuma yi haɗin gwiwa wajen kafa kamfanin post-production Company, Ben Duran.
