An fara ginin babban cocin na farko a ranar 29 ga watan Maris ɗin shekara ta 1867 kuma an kafa babban cocin ne a shekarar 1869.[ana buƙatar hujja]

An fara gina ginin na yanzu don ƙira ta Bagan Benjamin a ranar 1 ga Nuwamban shekarar 1924. Yariman Wales (daga baya Sarki Edward VIII ) ne ya aza ginin a ranar 21 ga Afrilun shekara ta 1925. [2] An kammala shi a cikin shekarar 1946.

A cikin shekarar 1976 aka fassara abubuwan tarihin Rev Dr Samuel Ajayi Crowther, wani tsohon ɗan kabilar Yarbawa wanda ya zama bishop na farko na Afirka a Cocin Anglican, zuwa babban coci. Akwai cenotaph da aka gina a matsayin abin tunawa da shi.

An fi saninta da Cocin Cathedral na Christ Marina, kuma ita ce babbar cocin Anglican a Cocin Najeriya. A lokuta daban-daban a tarihinta, babban cocin ya kasance wurin zama na babban limamin lardin Afirka ta Yamma, wurin zama na Archbishop kuma primate of All Nigeria kuma kujerar babban limamin lardin Legas. Ita ce a gaba mafi girma a Najeriya.

A shekarar 1969, shugaban Najeriya na lokacin, Yakubu Gowon ya auri Miss Victoria Zakari, a wani biki da Seth Irunsewe Kale ta jagoranta a babban cocin Cathedral.
