Mohit Sharma was an Indian Army Officer who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peace-time military decoration. Born on 13 January 1978 in Rohtak, Haryana, Major Sharma belonged to the elite 1st Para SF.
On 21 March 2009, Major Sharma engaged in an encounter with terrorists in the Hafruda forest of the Kupwara sector of Jammu and Kashmir, where he valiantly killed four terrorists and rescued two teammates despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. His courageous actions earned him the Ashoka Chakra, which was awarded posthumously.
Prior to this, Major Sharma had received two gallantry decorations earlier in his career. He was awarded the COAS Commendation card for exemplary counter-terrorism duties during Operation Rakshak, followed by the Sena Medal for gallantry after a covert operation in 2005.[1]
In 2019, the Delhi Metro Corporation renamed the Rajendra Nagar metro station as Major Mohit Sharma Rajendra Nagar metro station in his honor.[2]

Mohit Sharma completed his schooling from DPS Ghaziabad in 1995 and then attended Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj College of Engineering, Shegaon, Maharashtra. He cleared the NDA exam during this time and joined the National Defence Academy (NDA).[3]

Mohit Sharma joined the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in 1998 and was commissioned as a lieutenant in December 1999. He served in various capacities including with the 38 Rashtriya Rifles before opting to join the Para SF in June 2003.[4] Promoted to Major in December 2005,[5] he displayed exceptional leadership and bravery during his tenure, culminating in his heroic sacrifice in 2009.

For his supreme sacrifice and extraordinary bravery during the Kupwara operation, Major Mohit Sharma was awarded the nation's highest peace-time gallantry award, the Ashoka Chakra, on 26 January 2010.[6]
