Orlando Julius Aremu Olusanya Ekemode, wanda aka sani da Orlando Julius ko Orlando Julius Ekemode (22 Satumba 1943 - 14 Afrilu 2022)[1] ɗan saxon ɗan Najeriya ne, mawaƙi, ɗan bandeji, kuma marubucin waƙa wanda ke da alaƙa da kiɗan afrobeat.[2]

Julius ya fara ne da buga ganguna ko sarewa da makada juju da konkoma kuma ya koyi saxophone don kunna kiɗan kiɗa, daga ƙarshe yana wasa da mawaƙa Jazz Romero, Rex Williams, da Eddie Okonta. Ya fara gwaji tare da haɗa kiɗan gargajiya tare da ƙaho, guitar, da nau'ikan Amurkawa, haɗin gwiwa wanda aka fi sani da afrobeat. Ya sami hits na farko tare da "Jagua Nana" na 1965 da kundi na 1966 Super Afro Soul. A cikin 1970s, Julius ya koma Amurka, inda ya kafa makada tare da Hugh Masekela daga baya ya yi aiki a matsayin mawaƙin zaman taro kafin ya dawo Najeriya a 1984. An haifi Orlando Julius a cikin 1943 a Ikole, Najeriya a lokacin mulkin mallaka na Burtaniya zuwa dangin 'yan kasuwa masu tushe a Ijebu-Jesa, Osun.[3][4]. Malamin kida na farko na Julius ita ce mahaifiyarsa, wadda takan rera waka da rawa yayin da yake buga ganguna.[5] Ya halarci Makarantar Anglican St. Peter's a Ikole kuma ya yi wasa a kungiyar makada. A shekarar 1957, bayan ya daina makaranta kuma mahaifinsa ya rasu, ya tafi Ibadan domin yin sana’ar waka. Ya yi aiki a gidan burodi yayin da yake buga ganguna ko sarewa da makada juju da konkoma.[6] Babu makarantar waka a yankin a lokacin, don haka Firimiya Obafemi Awolowo ya kirkiro wata a sakatariyar jam’iyyarsa ta siyasa. Ya ɓata lokaci yana ƙoƙarin haɗawa da mawaƙin babban mawaƙin Jazz Romero, yana yi masa ayyuka yana fatan samun isashen tagomashi don darussan kiɗa. Romero ya gayyace shi ya yi wasa tare da makada a wani otal a Ondo, yana koyon waƙoƙinsa na farko akan kayan aikin da zai zama sananne da su, saxophone. Lokacin da Romero ya sami sabani da mai gidan rawan dare kuma ya fita a kan gig, Julius ya shiga a matsayin jagora. Ba da dadewa ba, ya dawo Ibadan, ya shiga ƙungiyar Highlife Rex Williams. A madadin darussa na yau da kullun, ya sha kade-kade sosai gwargwadon iyawa, yana siyan bayanan duk wani waka na kaho da zai iya, musamman ma wakokin highlife daga Ghana wanda ya shahara a Najeriya ma.[7]

A cikin 1960, Eddie Okonta ya gayyaci Julius don shiga ƙungiyar sa. Okonta's ya kasance daya daga cikin fitattun wasannin motsa jiki a Najeriya, kuma tare sun yi rera wakoki da dama, sun yi gigs da yawa, har ma sun bude wa Louis Armstrong. Julius ya yi wakarsa ta farko mai suna “Igbehin Adara” tare da gidan rediyon Najeriya a wannan shekarar.[8]

Amma a lokacin bai fi sha’awar wasan highlife ba fiye da “insa [wa]an gargajiya da na fara da su, in kara kaho da gita kadan, sannan in yi nawa”.[9] Don haka ya kafa Modern Aces a farkon 1960s kuma ya fara haɗa pop, R&B, da ruhi na Amurka cikin kiɗan Afirka da ya girma da shi.[10] Sun yi wasa akai-akai a Otal din Independence dake Ibadan. Haɗin kiɗan gargajiya tare da nau'ikan Amurkawa ya zama sananne da afrobeat, kalmar da Fela Kuti ya ƙirƙira. Kuti zai halarci wasan kwaikwayon Modern Aces, kuma Julius wani lokaci yakan kawo shi kan mataki don yin wasa. A cewar Julius, saboda shi ne Kuti ya koyi wasan saxophone.[11]
