An haifi Cyprian Odiatu Duaka Ekwensi, dan kabilar Ibo a garin Minna na jihar Neja . Shi dan asalin garin Nkwelle Ezunaka ne a karamar hukumar Oyi, jihar Anambra, Najeriya. Mahaifinsa shi ne David Anadumaka, mai ba da labari kuma mai farautar giwa.

Ekwensi ya halarci Kwalejin Gwamnati da ke Ibadan a Jihar Oyo da Kwalejin Achimota da ke Ghana da Makarantar Gandun Daji ta Ibadan, bayan ya yi aiki na tsawon shekaru biyu a matsayin jami’in kula da gandun daji. Ya kuma karanci kantin magani a Yaba Technical Institute, Lagos School of Pharmacy, da Chelsea School of Pharmacy na Jami'ar London . Ya yi koyarwa a Kwalejin Igbobi . [1]

Ekwensi ya auri Eunice Anyiwo, sun haifi ‘ya’ya biyar. Yana da jikoki da dama, ciki har da dansa Cyprian Ikechi Ekwensi, wanda aka yi wa kakansa suna, da kuma babban jikansa Adrianne Tobechi Ekwensi.

Ekwensi an dauke shi aiki a matsayin shugaban ayyuka a gidan rediyon Najeriya (NBC) da ma'aikatar yada labarai a lokacin jamhuriya ta farko ; daga karshe ya zama Darakta na karshen. Ya yi murabus a matsayinsa a 1966, kafin yakin basasa, kuma ya koma Enugu tare da iyalinsa. Daga baya ya yi aiki a matsayin shugaban ofishin yada labarai na Biafra, kafin Najeriya ta dawo da ita.

Kungiyar Marubuta ta Najeriya (ANA), da ta yi niyyar ba shi lambar yabo a ranar 16 ga Nuwamba, 2007, ta mayar da karramawar zuwa lambar yabo bayan mutuwarsa.
